How Long Is Recovery After Breast Augmentation? 5 Reasons Winter Is the Best Time for Surgery

Many women considering breast implants often envision feeling confident as they hit the lakes and beaches in stylish bikinis during the summer. If that sounds familiar, you’ll want to plan ahead, taking into consideration how long recovery is after breast augmentation. Scheduling your breast augmentation during the winter months is often the best choice.

Why? Here are 5 reasons winter can be the ideal time for breast augmentation.

Cooler Weather: Winter provides the perfect climate for post-surgery recovery. The cool temperatures encourage snuggling up and resting in the days after your procedure without feeling guilty. Wearing a surgical bra doesn’t seem so uncomfortable during colder months. With shorter days, there is also less risk of the sun damaging scar tissue, which is possible even when you’ve covered incisions with a bathing suit or tank top.

Post-Holiday Downtime: The busy holiday season is over, which typically means you’ve got more time to recover. How long is recovery after breast augmentation? Most patients can return to a desk job about a week after their procedure. It takes at least 4 weeks before you are clear to resume low-impact workouts. You can learn more about what to expect during breast augmentation recovery in our previous blog post.

Wearing Layers: Once you return to work or go out to dinner, wearing oversized sweaters or layers of clothing is one of the perks of breast augmentation in winter. This keeps you warm and allows you to conceal post-surgery garments or compression bras and breast implants that haven’t yet “dropped and fluffed” (more on that later). Winter fashion lets you maintain your style while prioritizing your comfort.

Few Outdoor Activities: Winter’s shorter days mean you won’t miss out on outdoor fun. When you’re recovering after breast augmentation, the last thing you want to hear about is friends hiking and spending quality time outside. During the winter, there is less temptation to “speed up” your recovery.

“Drop and Fluff” Takes a Few Months: Physically recovering after breast augmentation takes only a few days to a week. However, it can take several weeks to a few months before you’ll see the actual results of the procedure. Breast implants sit high on the chest immediately after breast augmentation and then gradually settle to a more natural-looking position as the muscles relax and the skin loosens—a process called “dropping and fluffing.” Patients usually see improvement in about 3 weeks as swelling fades. It typically takes about 6 weeks for the breasts to look more natural, with additional softening until about week 12. By spring and summer, you’ll look great in a bikini.
