Breast lift surgery is an excellent way to raise the breasts to create a more youthful silhouette. However, like any other surgery, its results don’t last forever. Skin continues to stretch as we age, and breasts gradually begin to sag. Luckily, there are ways you can prevent this from happening and slow the signs of aging.

If you’ve had a breast lift and are wondering how to keep your breasts perky, know that you have the power to protect your results. In this blog post, we share before and after photos and offer useful tips to keep your breasts perky after a breast lift for years to come.

1. Wear properly fitting bras.

Studies have shown that around 70 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size. This is a major issue as proper bra support prevents breast tissues from stretching out. Push-up bras can give too much lift, straining ligaments and muscles. Looser bras give too little lift and allow the breasts to sag. Be gentle on your body and opt for comfortable, supportive bras.

A softer, medium support bra is the best option for most breast lift patients, and they’re a good idea if you’ve had breast augmentation or implant exchange. Pictured below is a patient who had a breast lift with implants and note how a properly-fitted bra can provide a good support structure for her results.

2. Sleep on your back.

We spend around one-third of our life sleeping—which means there’s plenty of time for breasts to sag in bed. When you sleep on your side or front, ligaments are strained by gravity throughout the night and pulled in a downward direction. An easy way to better support your breasts is to sleep on your back each night. If this position doesn’t come naturally to you, try placing a pillow under each arm to keep your body securely yet comfortably in place.

3. Keep good posture.

Proper posture is good for more than just your back. If you hunch your shoulders or lean forward too often, your breasts will sag forward with the rest of your body. Try standing up straight when walking and avoid hunching over in your chair at work. Good posture can also help you look taller and enhance your silhouette, so there are many benefits to reap! VeryWell Health offers more tips about posture and other ways to prevent breast sagging.

4. Protect your skin.

Droopy breasts are created by loose muscles and ligaments, but skin plays a major role as well. Sun exposure damages the skin and stretches out the tissue, so avoid sunbathing or tanning excessively. Wear good sunscreen and protective clothing—like a sun hat or high-collared shirt—whenever you’re outdoors. Vigilant sun protection can also prevent many other signs of aging and keep your skin looking clear, youthful, and fresh.

5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

One of the most transformative things you can do to protect your breasts and your health is to lead a healthier lifestyle overall. Smoking and drinking dry out skin and hair, so cut back on these habits when you can. Eat nutritious foods and avoid “yo-yo dieting,” as extreme weight changes affect your skin’s elasticity.

It is true that all bodies change over time, even after a breast lift. With a bit of smart planning and prevention, you can support your breasts and keep your results looking great for years to come.

I was told that only one breast lift can be done as it kills the nipple and the area around that. I s that true if you gwt a second one?

    • Dr. Wayne Yamahata says:

In most patients a second mastopexy can be safely performed. This can be confirmed during a consultation by reviewing the prior surgery and completing an examination of the breasts.
