Breast Augmentation Revision: It’s Nothing to Be Afraid Of

A woman smiles after a successful breast augmentation procedure in Sacramento, CA

While most women are delighted with their decision to get breast implants, breast augmentation revision surgery at my Sacramento practice can become necessary for a few reasons. Whether driven by a desire to treat complications, change implant sizes, or simply upgrade to a newer model of implant, this is a common part of the breast augmentation journey. It can help women make sure their implants are aligned with their goals and lifestyle, even if those things change.

In this blog post, I’d like to discuss the reasons women opt for breast augmentation revision, and why the surgery is nothing to be worried about.

Upgrading Your Implants

Sometimes the reality of life with implants is different than what you envisioned before you had breast augmentation. After living with implants, many women have a better idea of what they want and which implants work best for their lifestyle. Elective implant upgrades are a choice many women make, often to switch out implants for aesthetic reasons such as a higher or lower implant profile, different sizing, and so on.

Implants and trends in implant choices have changed a lot over the past 10 years. Women who initially opted for one implant type for cosmetic or safety reasons have the opportunity to make a change with revision surgery. You can learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of different implant types on our breast implant options page.

Adjusting the Details

Revision surgery can be used to address complications such as capsular contracture, rippling, or texture changes. Location or movement issues can also be adjusted. For example, a common concern is “bottoming out,” which occurs when an implant moves below its original position and makes the breast appear unnatural. With revision surgery, we can easily move the implant to a more flattering location.

A benefit of these adjustments is that they don’t require additional incisions. I can typically use the same incision created during your original breast augmentation, meaning your revision won’t leave behind any new scars. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains more about the procedure details on its website.

Finding a New Look

Implants often last for 10 to 15 years, and it’s not uncommon to want to change your look during that time. Weight changes, lifestyle changes, and age-related changes can all lead to a desire to adjust your implant size.

Women often use revision surgery as an opportunity not only to alter their sizing but also to restore a more youthful, perky appearance with a simultaneous breast lift, and you can learn more about it in our related blog post. This is also a popular addition for women who choose to remove their implants altogether.

While breast augmentation revision is a normal part of the journey, it is also a more complicated procedure than an initial augmentation. For this reason, it’s essential to work with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon you can trust.

Fat transfer can only modestly increase breast size—usually less than 1 cup size. Most women choose implants to achieve the volume they want, and I offer all the latest, proven implant options, including the Ideal Implant.
